Fred Carrillo as a hotrodder
Did you know that Fred Carrillo (1926-2013), founder of Carrillo rods was an avid hotrodder? Together with his brother in-law, he build a 1927 Ford Model T, with a Winfield-equipped flathead for time trials at El Mirage. They made their own parts and ran their hot rods at El Mirage and Bonneville successfully until 1953, when a failure in one of his magnesium wheels at nearly 300 mph destroyed his race car and forced the amputation of his left leg below the knee. He was inducted into the Dry Lakes Racing Hall of Fame in 2001 for his contributions to Land Speed Racing.
