Shelf Pistons Upgraded with Profiled Pin Bore Technology | CP-Carrillo

Shelf Pistons Receive Performance Upgrade

We’re proud to announce a rolling change to our high-moving shelf piston part numbers. These pistons are now being upgraded with Profiled Pin Bore Technology.

This advanced design adds trumpet shapes to the pin bore, helping distribute and reduce peak stress and contact loads. The result?

  • Better performance under extreme conditions

  • Longer life with reduced wear

Engine builders know that every detail matters when it comes to reliability and performance. The profiled pin bore is a game-changer, designed to enhance piston longevity, improve load distribution, and reduce failure risks—especially in endurance racing and OEM applications where engine components face extreme stress over countless cycles.

Piston pin bores are not always manufactured to be perfect cylinders. Unlike traditional honing, which creates a perfectly cylindrical pin bore, utilizing a profiled pin bore introduces a precision-shaped profile, typically a trumpet-like or oval form. This design optimizes how the piston pin interacts with the bore, offering significant advantages:

  • Extended Component Life – By reducing peak contact pressures, fatigue cracks are minimized, making your pistons last longer under extreme load cycles.
  • Precision Fit & Tolerance Control – Final shape and consistency of the pin bore shape is more accurate. You get a level of precision that ensures optimal function and consistency.
  • Better Load Distribution – Traditional round pin bores cause stress concentration toward the piston centerline, leading to premature wear. Profiled Pin Bore technology spreads the load evenly, reducing typical stress areas and enhancing structural integrity. In some cases, a trumpet-shaped pin bore can reduce peak stress by 30%.

In addition to the strength benefits of the profiled pin bore, these pistons will also deliver a significant improvement in final turn diameter consistency, ensuring repeatability and reliability across every part.

This upgrade process has already begun, and eventually all shelf pistons will feature this enhanced technology. It’s one more step in our commitment to deliver the strongest, most reliable pistons in the industry.

Stay tuned as we continue rolling out these improvements across our product line.
